Taza is located in northern Morocco at a strategic bottleneck between the Rif Mountains and the Middle Atlas, known as the Taza Gap. This geographic positioning historically made the city the most vital connection point between the eastern Maghreb and the Atlantic plains of Morocco. The fortified upper city, Taza al-Alia, was developed in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty, with the Great Mosque established in 1142 as one of its most significant architectural landmarks. Later, the Marinids expanded the defenses in the 13th century with massive bastions that still characterize the cityscape today. Beyond its historical importance, the region is famous for the Friouato Cave, which reaches a depth of approximately 270 meters and is one of North Africa's most notable karst systems. Today, Taza serves as an administrative center and a key commercial hub for agricultural products from the surrounding mountain regions.
