Borj Nord (Morocco)

Weather…

Borj Nord is an imposing fortress in Fez, built in 1582 under the reign of Saadian Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. Perched on a hill north of the Fes el-Bali medina, it was designed to overlook the city and protect it from both local uprisings and external threats. The architecture of Borj Nord was heavily influenced by Portuguese military designs, distinguishing it from traditional Moroccan fortifications. Its star-shaped foundation allowed for highly effective defense utilizing cannons. Since 1963, the building has housed the National Weapons Museum (Musée des Armes), showcasing one of the world's most significant collections of its kind. The collection comprises over 8,000 items, including ornate sabers, historic muskets, and a massive cannon from the Battle of Alcácer-Quibir. From the fortress terraces, visitors enjoy one of the best panoramic views over the entire Old City of Fez. Borj Nord remains a fascinating example of Morocco's military history and the technological evolution of defense systems during the 16th century.
