Bogd Khan Palace Museum (Mongolia)

Weather…

The Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan in Ulaanbaatar is one of Mongolia's most vital historical landmarks, having served as the official residence for the eighth Bogd Gegeen, the nation's final spiritual and political ruler. Constructed between 1893 and 1903, the estate features a European-style palace building alongside a complex of six traditional Chinese-influenced temples. Following the Bogd Khan's death in 1924, the site was converted into a national museum, a move that shielded it from the widespread purges of the Stalinist era. Currently, the museum exhibits a vast array of the Khan's personal belongings, including ceremonial robes, diplomatic gifts from foreign heads of state, and an eccentric collection of taxidermy. The temples on the grounds house exquisite thangka paintings and masterworks by the famous sculptor Zanabazar. The palace complex provides an intimate look into the lives of Mongolia's royalty and the country's transition from a theocratic monarchy to a modern state.
