Khongoryn Els
Khongoryn Els, often called the 'Singing Sands', is one of Mongolia's most magnificent natural wonders within the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. These massive dunes stretch for about 180 kilometers and reach heights of up to 300 meters. The poetic name refers to the deep, humming sound created by shifting sand grains in the wind. Travelers are drawn here to witness the vastness of the desert and to take on the physical challenge of climbing the dunes to see the sunset from the summit. At the foot of the golden sands, the Khongoryn Gol river flows, creating a lush green oasis that contrasts sharply with the arid environment. This area is great for camel trekking, allowing visitors to experience the nomadic lifestyle of the local families who herd livestock nearby. Staying in a traditional ger camp under the star-filled desert sky provides a profound sense of peace and connection with nature. Reaching Khongoryn Els requires a sturdy 4WD vehicle and an experienced driver, typically starting from Dalanzadgad. The best time to visit is during the warmer months from June to September. Be prepared for high temperatures during the day and cooler nights, and don't miss the chance to try traditional Mongolian dairy products like 'aarul' offered by local nomads.
