Gobi Desert (Mongolia)

Weather…

The Gobi Desert is a vast, cold desert region spanning southern Mongolia and northern China, ranking as one of the largest deserts in the world. It is a rain shadow desert, created by the Himalayan plateau blocking moisture-bearing clouds from reaching the interior of Central Asia. Unlike typical sandy deserts, only about 5% of the Gobi consists of sand dunes; the majority is covered in bare rock, gravel plains, and resilient dry steppes. Geologically, it is a paleontological goldmine, famously hosting the 1920s expeditions that discovered the first fossilized dinosaur eggs. The climate is notoriously extreme, with temperatures swinging from 45°C in the summer to -40°C in the deep winter. Historically, the Gobi was a formidable section of the Silk Road, where caravans navigated between scattered oases. Today, it provides a habitat for rare wildlife, such as the wild Bactrian camel and the Gobi bear. The ongoing process of desertification in the Gobi is a major environmental concern, impacting agriculture and air quality across East Asia.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Most organized expeditions to the vast desert regions begin with a domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad, followed by long journeys in reliable four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles.
📅
Best season
Late spring and early autumn are generally the safest times to travel, as this avoids the blistering, dangerous heat of mid-summer and the freezing, snow-swept conditions of the harsh winter.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Contrary to popular belief, the landscape consists mostly of vast stretches of bare rock, hard-packed gravel plains, and dramatic canyons, rather than just endless waves of rolling sand dunes.
🎒
What to bring
It is crucial to pack layered clothing for dramatic day-to-night temperature drops, high-SPF sun protection, wide-brimmed hats, dust masks, and an extremely large reserve of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
There is practically no infrastructure; vehicles are simply parked at temporary nomadic ger camps or directly alongside natural landmarks where guided drivers decide it is safe to establish a base.
⚠️
Safety
The immense isolation, lack of mobile network coverage, and risk of getting stranded mean that traveling without an experienced local guide, spare tires, and extra fuel is incredibly dangerous.
⏱️
Time needed
Given the enormous distances involved in reaching various sites, a meaningful exploration of the region typically requires a dedicated itinerary spanning anywhere from five days to over two weeks.
