Sangiin Kherem, also known as the 'Treasury Fortress,' comprises the ruins of a significant Manchu fortress located in Khovd city, western Mongolia. Built in 1762 during the Qing Dynasty, the fortress served as the political, military, and administrative hub for governing the western territories of Mongolia. The square-shaped complex originally covered an area of about 40,000 square meters and was protected by massive mud-brick walls two meters thick. Inside the fortifications were the palaces of the Manchu governor (amban), military barracks, warehouses, and temples. During the Mongolian struggle for independence in 1912, the fortress was besieged and stormed by Mongolian forces, signaling the end of Manchu rule in the region. Today, only the impressive remains of the walls stand as a testament to the former grandeur and strategic importance of this site along the Silk Road.

Visiting
The ruins of the historic Sangiin Kherem fortress in Khovd can be visited outdoors at any time. As it is an open and unprotected area, the remains of the former Manchu complex are freely accessible to the public.

There are no official opening hours or ticket offices here, so a visit is generally possible from early morning until late evening. However, it is highly recommended to plan your exploration during daylight hours for safety and visibility.

The extensive remains and mud walls provide an excellent backdrop for atmospheric landscape photography in the Mongolian steppe. The warm light during the early morning or late evening hours is particularly convenient for capturing memorable shots.

For a relaxed walk through the remaining fortifications, visitors should generally plan to spend around thirty to sixty minutes here. This time is perfectly sufficient to take in the sheer scale of the historic site and its surroundings.

Getting there
The ruins are located in the northern part of the city and are most easily reached by a private off-road vehicle or a local taxi. Alternatively, visitors can take a longer, scenic walk from the northern districts directly to the historical site.
Insider tip
Since the terrain is uneven and has no shade whatsoever, it is highly recommended to wear sturdy footwear and bring adequate sun protection along with drinking water. During the summer months, the heat in this region can become quite intense.
