Water temperature…
Ulaangom, whose name means red land, has one of the most extreme climates in all of Mongolia. The town lies at 939 metres above sea level in the Great Lakes Depression on the southern shore of Uvs Nuur and has been the capital of Uvs Province since 1925. Around 27,000 people live here, 1,336 kilometres west of Ulaanbaatar and just 30 kilometres from the Russian border. Nearby Lake Uvs Nuur, covering 3,350 square kilometres, is the largest lake in Mongolia and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003; its 18.4 per mille salinity makes it undrinkable for most animals. Ulaangom's climate is among the world's harshest, with winter lows reaching minus 50 degrees and summer highs exceeding plus 40 degrees, an annual swing of nearly 90 degrees. The region is the homeland of the western Mongolian Dörvöd people, keepers of a distinct dialect and rich musical folklore. The town itself was founded in 1757 as a monastery of the Sangiin lineage and later evolved into an administrative centre.
