Khar-Us Lake is a major freshwater lake located in the Khovd Province of western Mongolia, situated within the Great Lakes Depression. Spanning an area of approximately 1,852 square kilometers, it is the second-largest freshwater lake in the country, though it is relatively shallow with an average depth of just 2 meters. The lake is primarily fed by the Khovd, Buyant, and Tsenkher rivers and drains into the neighboring Khar Lake through a natural channel. Ecologically, the area is highly significant as a vital habitat for migratory birds and rare waterfowl, leading to its designation as a Ramsar site. Extensive reed beds along its shores provide shelter for numerous species, including the Mongolian beaver. Local nomadic communities have utilized the lake's water for livestock grazing for generations. Due to its high evaporation rates and shallow nature, the lake is sensitive to climate fluctuations, making it a key site for environmental research.
