Lake
The Stânca-Costești Reservoir on the Prut River is the largest artificial lake in Moldova, jointly managed with Romania. It was created between 1973 and 1978 following the construction of a 47-meter-high dam and a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 32 MW. Geographically, the reservoir covers an area of approximately 59 square kilometers at normal water levels and possesses a maximum capacity of 1.29 billion cubic meters. Originally, the project was designed to regulate the Prut River's flow to prevent flooding, while also facilitating electricity production and agricultural irrigation. The surrounding landscape is renowned for its remarkable limestone formations, known as 'Moldovan Toltre,' which lend the area a mountainous character. The reservoir has evolved into a vital ecosystem, serving as a haven for numerous waterfowl and supporting local commercial fishing. Today, Stânca-Costești is a popular recreational destination, often referred to as the 'Moldovan Sea' due to its vast size and scenic beauty.

Getting there
Access the reservoir via roads heading to the town of Costesti near the Romanian border. The main recreational and viewing areas are situated near the hydroelectric dam and along the eastern shore.
Best season
Summer is the peak season for visiting, offering warm weather convenient for enjoying the water views and shoreline activities. Winters can be bitterly cold with strong, freezing winds sweeping across the open lake.
Terrain & paths
The immediate shoreline varies from grassy banks to rocky, artificial reinforcements near the dam. Walking paths are largely unpaved but generally flat and easy to traverse near the water's edge.
What to bring
Light walking shoes are sufficient for casual strolls along the banks. Given the lack of shade near the vast water body, bringing strong sun protection, a hat, and a windbreaker is highly advisable.
Parking
Ample parking can usually be found near the dam infrastructure or in designated pull-offs along the approach roads. Avoid leaving valuables visible, especially when parking in more secluded spots along the lake.
Safety
Swimming in unauthorized areas is extremely dangerous due to sudden depth changes and strong currents near the hydroelectric dam. Respect all fenced areas and border control signs, as it is an international frontier.
Time needed
A typical visit to enjoy the panoramic views and walk along the accessible shoreline takes about two hours. Photographers and birdwatchers may easily spend a half-day exploring different vantage points.
