💡 Tips
- As a transport hub, the train and bus station area is busy; keep a close eye on your belongings when transiting.
- Walk a few blocks away from the main transit zones to find cheaper and more authentic local cafes.
- Always verify train schedules directly at the station counter, as online timetables for regional routes are often outdated.
- In the summer, the vast sunflower fields just outside the town limits offer fantastic photo opportunities at golden hour.
🍽 Food
Enjoy this hearty polenta and roast meat dish at local taverns near the transit hub.
Warm up with a bowl of traditional beetroot soup at homestyle eateries in the town center.
Often served alongside black tea in local cafes; a sweet local staple.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Explore the central market in the morning for fresh dairy, vegetables, and homemade preserves.
Look for locally produced jams and honey in the independent shops along the main streets.
Take a short break in the small, green central square away from the station's hustle.
Walk towards the edge of town for peaceful views over the rolling northern Moldovan farmland.

Dondușeni owes its existence to the expansion of the regional railway network in the late 19th century. The settlement grew around a railway station established in 1894 on the line connecting Bălți and Ocnița, quickly becoming a gathering place for local farmers and merchants. Located in northern Moldova at an elevation of 220 meters, it now serves as the administrative seat of the Dondușeni District. The town's landscape is defined by its industrial heritage, particularly in food processing, with sugar refineries and large-scale mills processing the harvest from the surrounding fertile plains. While the railway station remains a central landmark and a reminder of the city's origins, the modern center features administrative offices and public parks that cater to the local population. For visitors, it has a glimpse into the agricultural backbone of the country, where the rhythm of life is still closely tied to the seasonal harvests and the transport of goods across the northern borders.
