Hundred Mounds (Moldova)

Weather…

The 'Hundred Mounds' (Suta de Movile) is a unique natural phenomenon located in the Rîșcani District, on a terrace of the Prut River between the villages of Braniște and Cobani. Despite its name, the area actually contains over 3,500 mounds of varying sizes, stretching across a length of about 8 kilometers and a width of up to 2 kilometers. Geologically, these are believed to be the remains of ancient sea reefs, shaped by tectonic shifts and subsequent erosion, though several competing scientific theories exist regarding their origin. The highest elevation, known as 'Movila Țiganului' (the Gypsy Mound), rises approximately 30 meters above the surrounding landscape. The area is part of the 'Pădurea Domnească' scientific reserve and hosts a specific steppe vegetation and numerous rare insect species. Local folklore often identifies the mounds as burial sites for ancient warriors, but archaeological evidence strongly supports a natural, geomorphological origin. Today, it stands as a captivating destination for hikers and researchers interested in Moldova's enigmatic topographical features.
