Cobani Reef (Moldova)

Weather…

The Cobani Reef, often referred to as 'Stânca Cobani', is an extraordinary geological formation located in northern Moldova near the Prut River. It is a fossilized coral reef that originated in the Sarmatian Sea approximately 10 to 12 million years ago. The reef rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape and is part of the 'Prut Toltre' chain of limestone hills. These formations are unique in Europe as they were created not by tectonic shifts, but by the gradual accumulation of marine organism skeletons, such as algae and corals. From the top of the Cobani cliffs, visitors can enjoy expansive views over the Prut floodplain and the nearby 'Pădurea Domnească' nature reserve. Beyond its geological and paleontological importance, the reef provides a habitat for rare steppe vegetation and serves as a nesting site for various avian species. The stark white limestone structures stand in beautiful contrast to the lush greenery of the river valley, making it one of Moldova's most significant natural monuments.
