Duruitoarea Veche Gorges (Moldova)

Weather…

The Duruitoarea Gorges are located in northern Moldova, Rîșcani District, near the village of Duruitoarea Veche. The gorge was carved by the Duruitoarea stream through Sarmatian limestone reefs that were once part of a prehistoric coral barrier in the Paratethys Sea. It is world-renowned for its steep walls and the Duruitoarea Veche cave, one of Europe's most significant Stone Age archaeological sites. This cavern has yielded evidence of Paleolithic human settlements along with fossilized remains of extinct animals like mammoths and cave bears. The geological formation is notable for its bizarre shapes created by millions of years of water and wind erosion. The site provides panoramic views of the Costești-Stânca reservoir, the second largest in the country. The flora of the gorge consists of rare rock-dwelling species adapted to the harsh, dry environment. Today, Duruitoarea is a key site for archaeological research and a highlight for nature-based tourism in Moldova.
