Bechir Ravine, popularly known as Râpa lui Bechir, is a distinctive geological formation located on the high right bank of the Dniester River near Soroca. This erosional ravine has carved deeply into Cretaceous limestone layers, exposing vertical walls of brilliant white rock that dominate the landscape. A unique feature of the ravine is the Bechir Cave, a small hermitage hewn into the rock face, believed to date back to the 6th to 9th centuries. The ravine serves as a habitat for specialized flora adapted to dry limestone environments and various birds of prey that nest in its rocky crevices. Geologically, the site provides valuable insights into the stratification of Sarmatian marine deposits, revealed by the powerful erosive force of water over millennia. Getting there
The spectacular ravine is located very close to Soroca and is easily accessible by car or via a longer walk from the historical town center. The narrow main path faithfully follows the deep limestone valley that starts very near the Dniester River.
Best season
Mild spring and warm summer are absolutely well-suited for exploring the fascinating valley, when the vegetation is lush and the paths are pleasantly dry. Colorful autumn also provides incredibly attractive, photogenic contrasts against the steep, bright limestone walls.
Terrain & paths
The striking area is characterized by very steep limestone slopes, rough stony paths, and sometimes extremely narrow valley sections. The direct approach to the historical hermitage carved high into the rock can certainly require light scrambling over slippery rocky terrain.
What to bring
Sturdy, high-top hiking footwear with a truly good grip is crucial for safely walking on the narrow rocky paths. A bright flashlight is also extremely helpful if you want to more closely inspect the old, dark caves of the historical hermitage.
Parking
Regular parking spots are generally found at the outer edge of Soroca, where the paved streets descend steeply towards the Dniester banks. Please note that during local holidays or weekends, the available space can quickly become quite limited.
Safety
Always be extra cautious on the unsecured, steep edges and the crumbling limestone sections, especially near the caves. Imperatively avoid the entire area during heavy rain due to the acute risk of completely unpredictable rockfalls.
Time needed
A completely normal, undisturbed visit, which includes an extended walk through the valley and viewing the hermitage, takes a relaxed one to two hours. Passionate photography enthusiasts usually stay significantly longer because of the striking, rugged rock formations.
