Soroca Plateau (Moldova)

Weather…

The Soroca Plateau is located in northeastern Moldova, directly bordering the deep valley of the Dniester (Nistru). Geomorphologically, it is part of the Dniester Plateau and is distinguished by its rocky nature and the presence of hard Cretaceous and Neogene limestones. The plateau is dissected by deep canyon-like valleys created by the tributaries of the Dniester. A special feature is the numerous limestone outcrops that give the landscape an almost mountainous character. Historically, the region was a center for stonemasonry due to its stable rock layers; the stone extracted here was used, among other things, for the construction of the famous Soroca Fortress. The soils are often shallow and stony, restricting natural vegetation to dry grasslands and xerophilous shrubs. Climatic conditions are moderated by proximity to the Dniester Valley, allowing for the cultivation of specialty crops in sheltered areas. Spectacular views of the Dniester's windings and the Ukrainian side are visible from the plateau's heights.
