Soroca Fortress (Moldova)

Weather…

Soroca Fortress is an outstanding monument of medieval defensive architecture located in northeastern Moldova on the banks of the Dniester River. It was originally established as a wooden fortification in the 15th century by Stephen the Great and later rebuilt in stone between 1543 and 1546 during the reign of Petru Rareș. The fortress is unique for its circular layout, measuring 30 meters in diameter and featuring five evenly spaced towers. This architectural design was rare in Eastern Europe at the time and served a critical strategic role in protecting the border against Tatar and Polish incursions. The walls, which reach up to four meters in thickness, have survived numerous sieges and remain a symbol of Moldovan historical continuity. Between 2013 and 2015, the fortress underwent extensive restoration through a European Union-funded project to preserve its original structure. Today, it houses a museum and serves as a primary destination for those interested in the military history of the Principality of Moldavia. The towers offer a panoramic view across the Dniester to Ukraine.
