Pădurea Domnească, which translates to 'The Royal Forest', was established in 1993 and is Moldova's largest scientific reserve by area, covering 6,032 hectares. It extends along the Prut River in the Glodeni and Fălești districts in the northwest of the country. The area is famous for its floodplain forests, which are seasonally inundated by the Prut, and it hosts the largest heron colony in Moldova, nicknamed 'The Land of Herons'. A unique geological feature within the reserve is 'Suta de Movile' (A Hundred Mounds), an area with thousands of mysterious hillocks whose origin remains a subject of scientific debate. In 2005, European bison were reintroduced from Poland and now represent a major attraction. The reserve also protects 'Stânca Mare', a massive Miocene-era coral reef formation.

Best season
The best season in Royal Forest Reserve is spring from April to June, when ancient oak forests and bison herds are most active. Autumn from September to October attracts migratory birds in the wetlands.
Best time of day
Early morning and dusk are best for spotting bison on open meadows; at midday they retreat to oak shade. Plan your visit for these cooler, low-light periods.
Etiquette
Keep at least 100 meters away from bison - they are large, unpredictable wild animals. Feeding is strictly forbidden as it habituates them to humans and disrupts natural behavior.
What to bring
A quality 10x42 binocular is recommended for spotting bison and birds from a safe distance. Waterproof hiking boots with good grip are essential for wet forest trails and marshy wetland areas.
Getting there
The Royal Forest Reserve is best accessed by car via the regional road along the Prut River. The main entrance is signposted, with marked trails leading to bison enclosures and wetlands.
What to expect
Bison are not always in sight - they roam the entire forest. Spend at least two hours at one viewpoint to increase your chances of spotting the herd.
