The Pădurea Domnească (Royal Forest) Natural Reserve in Glodeni District is the largest protected area in Moldova, covering 6,031 hectares. Spanning the middle course of the Prut River, it was established in 1993 to preserve the country's most significant floodplain forest complex. Geographically, the reserve is renowned for its 'Ancient Oaks,' with some specimens exceeding 450 years in age and reaching heights of up to 35 meters. A historical milestone was the reintroduction of the European bison in 2005, a species that had been extinct in the region since the 18th century; today, a small herd resides within the reserve. The territory also encompasses the unique 'Hundred Knolls' geomorphological phenomenon and hosts substantial heron colonies in its wetlands. The diversity of habitats, ranging from dense woodlands to open water surfaces, establishes the reserve as a key center for environmental conservation and scientific study in Eastern Europe.

Best season
Spring (April-June) is convenient in Royal Forest Reserve, when ancient oaks bloom and bison calves are born. Autumn (September-October) gives migratory birds and golden foliage.
Best time of day
At dusk bison are most active, grazing in clearings; late morning and early afternoon they rest in dense forest. Early morning and evening hours are thus preferable for sightings.
Etiquette
Always stay on marked trails to avoid disturbing vegetation and startling animals. Collecting plants or entering protected zones is prohibited to safeguard the habitat.
What to bring
A high-light-gathering binocular (e.g., 8x42) helps spot bison and birds in low light. Rubber boots are advisable in wet wetlands and after rainfall.
Getting there
The reserve is accessible via an asphalt road from the nearest village, with parking at the entrance. Circular trails lead through the forest and to the wetlands.

Bison are shy and may hide in dense forest. Plan a full day and change locations regularly to locate the herd.
