The Great Rock of Cobani, locally known as 'Stânca Mare,' is a prominent natural monument in the Glodeni District of northwestern Moldova. This massive limestone reef extends for about one kilometer and rises up to 40 meters above the Prut River valley. Geologically, it belongs to the chain of Sarmatian reefs that formed millions of years ago in a shallow, warm sea. the rock is densely packed with fossils of prehistoric marine organisms such as corals and algae. Archaeologically, the site is highly significant due to the discovery of an ancient fortress's remains and evidence of human settlements from various historical periods. The vegetation on and around the rock is unique, hosting rare steppe plant species that are nearly extinct elsewhere in the country. From the reef's summit, visitors can enjoy extensive views over the Prut Valley and into neighboring Romania. Protecting the area ensures the preservation of this unique geological and cultural heritage.

Best season
The Great Rock of Cobani is best visited in late spring (May-June), when rare insects and plants show their highest activity. Early autumn (September) is also suitable to enjoy the coloring of the rock vegetation.
Best time of day
Morning is handy to view the east-facing cliffs in sunlight, attracting heat-loving insects. Late afternoon the light shifts to the west side, offering new perspectives.
Etiquette
Climbing on the rocks is prohibited to protect the fragile limestone formation and the rare species living there. Please do not remove rocks or plants, and walk only on designated paths.
What to bring
Sturdy footwear with non-slip soles is advisable, as the ground around the rock can be uneven. A magnifying glass or macro lens is excellent for examining the tiny insects and lichens.
Getting there
The Great Rock of Cobani is located near the village of Cobani in northwestern Moldova, about 20 kilometers from Bălți. Access is via the regional road R9 and then a dirt road; a regular car is fine.
What to expect
The rare insects are small and well-camouflaged - take time to slowly scan rock crevices and plants. Look for movement first; often the animals are present before you spot them.
