Prut Toltry (Moldova)

Weather…

The Prut Toltry, often referred to as the 'Land of Reefs,' are a unique chain of limestone hills in northern Moldova, stretching through the Briceni, Edineț, and Rîșcani districts. These geological formations are not ordinary mountains but fossil coral reefs formed approximately 15 to 20 million years ago in the warm waters of the Sarmatian and Tortonian seas. Unlike oceanic coral reefs, these are composed of calcareous algae, corals, and shells that petrified over time into massive rock. The relief is characterized by spectacular cliffs, deep gorges, and easy on the eye rock towers often rising over 100 meters high. Historically, the limestone caves within the Toltry served humans as refuges and spiritual sites for millennia. Botanically, the region houses rare mountain plants not found elsewhere in Moldova, as the limestone creates a specific microclimate. Today, the Prut Toltry represent one of the most impressive natural wonders of Eastern Europe and an important geological heritage.
