Edineț Toltry (Moldova)

Weather…

The Edineț Toltry are a unique chain of limestone reefs in northern Moldova, geologically comparable to the coral reefs of tropical seas. These formations emerged approximately 15 to 20 million years ago in the shallow waters of the Sarmatian and Badenian seas. Unlike the Carpathian Mountains, the Toltry are not tectonic fold mountains but consist of the remains of corals, algae, and shells. The relief near Edineț is characterized by spectacular rocky ridges, deep gorges, and steep cliffs that protrude from the otherwise flat plateau landscape. The valleys of the Racovăț and Draghiște rivers have carved deep into this limestone, creating easy on the eye canyons. Numerous caves and grottos can be found in the rock walls, which were utilized by humans as early as the Stone Age. Today, the Edineț Toltry are important natural monuments and host rare flora that thrives on the calcareous substrate.
