Frunză is one of the youngest towns in Moldova, located in the Ocnița District in the far north of the country. The town's origin is inextricably linked to the construction of a large sugar refinery in 1969, around which the residential settlement was planned and built. Frunză officially attained town status in 1973. Geographically, it is situated on a gently rolling plateau near the Ukrainian border, close to the town of Otaci. The townscape is dominated by typical 1970s Soviet architecture, characterized by functional apartment buildings and ample green spaces within the planned settlement. For decades, the sugar industry formed the economic backbone of the community, providing the vast majority of local employment. Following the economic shifts of the 1990s and the decline in industrial output, the town sought new economic directions but remains an important local hub in the border region. Frunză is known for its quiet atmosphere and the blending of industrial and residential zones within the northern Moldovan agricultural landscape.
