Curepipe Town Hall (Mauritius)

Weather…

The Curepipe Town Hall, widely referred to as the Hôtel de Ville, stands as a premier example of 19th-century colonial wooden architecture in Mauritius. The building has a nomadic history, having been originally constructed in the Moka district at the La Malmaison estate. In 1902, it was carefully dismantled and transported to its current location in Curepipe to serve the growing inland population. Its design is characterized by intricate fretwork, wide-open verandas, and steep roofs designed to handle the frequent rains of the central plateau. Surrounded by a manicured garden, the structure remains a functional hub for the local municipality while serving as a landmark for tourists. Its preservation provides a tangible link to the island's architectural evolution and its shift toward the highlands during the colonial era.
