Tichitt is an ancient oasis town in the Tagant region of Mauritania, renowned for its date trade since the 11th century. Located along historic trans-Saharan caravan routes, it connected West African gold and salt markets. The date palm groves cover 200 hectares, yielding about 1,500 tons annually of the prized 'Tichitti' variety, known for its natural sweetness and long shelf life due to arid conditions. In 1985, a date cooperative was established to modernize processing and marketing. However, climate-induced droughts have reduced yields by 30% over the past two decades. Tichitt's mud-brick architecture and mosque are UNESCO World Heritage sites, contributing to a nascent tourism sector. The trade remains a pillar of the local economy, supporting over 500 families.
