This endorheic basin transforms into a temporary lake only following the rare but intense rainfalls of the monsoon season. During this brief period, the otherwise dusty and barren landscape becomes a vital hub for the region's nomadic pastoralists. Thousands of cattle, sheep, and camels are driven here to drink from this precious water source. As the lake has no outlet, the water gradually soaks into the sandy substrate or evaporates, often leaving behind a layer of fertile silt that supports temporary grass growth. Geologically, Lake Ouane is an important indicator of the Saharan hydrological cycles. For travelers, the sight of shimmering water amidst the reddish rocks of the plateau features a dramatic and beautiful contrast to the surrounding desert expanse.

Driving across the Tagant Plateau to reach this lakebed typically requires a capable off-road vehicle. Unpaved and rocky tracks lead downwards toward the large natural depression.
