Banc d'Arguin National Park is one of Africa's most significant protected areas and a paradise for birdwatchers. Here, on Mauritania's Atlantic coast, the massive sand dunes of the Sahara meet the shallow, nutrient-rich ocean. This unique ecosystem of sandbanks, mudflats, and islands provides a vital wintering ground for over two million migratory birds from Northern Europe and Siberia every year. A special highlight is encountering the Imraguen fishermen, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. They use traditional sailing boats and often collaborate with dolphins to drive schools of fish into their nets. This archaic way of life is as fascinating as the endless landscape. Visitors can experience the silence of the desert and the power of the ocean simultaneously. Getting here requires a 4x4 vehicle from Nouakchott or Nouadhibou, as there are no paved roads within the park. Accommodation is mostly found in simple but authentic tented camps right on the coast. The best time for birdwatching is from December to February. The local cuisine is simple and centers on freshly caught fish, often prepared over an open fire.
