Tidra Island is the largest island in the Banc d'Arguin National Park, stretching approximately 28 kilometers in length. It is a vital component of the Mauritanian coastline, characterized by extensive mudflats and seagrass beds that emerge during low tide. These areas serve as essential feeding grounds for millions of migratory birds traveling from Europe and Northern Asia, including spoonbills and various sandpipers. The island is the ancestral home of the Imraguen people, a traditional fishing community famous for their unique symbiotic relationship with wild dolphins to herd schools of mullet into their nets. Historically, Tidra gained prominence in the 11th century as a stronghold for the Almoravid movement. Visitors and researchers value the island for its pristine desert-maritime landscape, where shifting sand dunes meet the Atlantic, providing one of the last remaining sanctuaries for the Mediterranean monk seal in the region.

The best visiting time is from November to March, when seabirds nest in large colonies and seals rest on the beaches. In the summer months June to August birds are less active and temperatures are extremely high.

Keep a minimum distance of 50 meters from seal colonies to avoid stressing the animals. Landing on the island is not allowed without permission from the park authorities.
