Azougui
Azougui is a site of immense historical significance, tucked away in a fertile valley of the Adrar Mountains. In the 11th century, it served as the first capital of the mighty Almoravid Empire, which expanded from here as far as Spain and Morocco. Today, the impressive ruins of the old fortress and town walls bear witness to this glorious past, attracting history buffs from around the world. In addition to its archaeological treasures, Azougui is known for its extensive palm groves, which provide a sharp contrast to the surrounding desert landscape. Prehistoric rock paintings can be found in the cliffs above the valley, proving that the region has been inhabited for millennia. A walk through the village has insights into traditional life, where agriculture and the date harvest still play a central role. Azougui is located just 10 km northwest of Atar, making it a handy half-day excursion. The best time to visit is between November and March when the heat is manageable. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, excellent for reflecting on the rise and fall of great empires. Simple guesthouses nearby offer traditional Mauritanian hospitality.
