Azougui Fort (Mauritania)

Weather…

The Fort of Azougui marks the historical site of the 11th-century capital of the Almoravid Empire, located deep within the Adrar plateau. It was from this strategic oasis base that the Almoravid dynasty launched the conquests that eventually unified large parts of North Africa and Islamic Spain. Today, visitors can still see the remains of the massive dry-stone walls and the foundations of the central citadel, surrounded by flourishing groves of date palms. Archaeological excavations have highlighted the city's past as a crucial hub for trans-Saharan trade and religious scholarship. Azougui stands as a poignant testament to the early power and cultural reach of the nomadic Saharan empires, representing a pivotal era in Mauritanian and Islamic history.
