Azougui Historical Ruins (Mauritania)

Weather…

Azougui served as the primary capital for the Almoravid dynasty during the 11th century, marking a significant period in West African and Maghrebi history. Located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Atar in the Adrar Plateau, the site is positioned within a lush palm grove that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert terrain. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains of a massive stone citadel, defensive walls, and a necropolis associated with the cleric Imam Hadrami, who is still venerated locally. As a strategic stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes, Azougui facilitated the movement of goods and religious scholars between the Maghreb and the Ghana Empire. Today, visitors can explore the weathered ruins and the nearby traditional village, where the irrigation systems still reflect centuries-old agricultural practices. The site has a deep perspective on the nomadic origins of a powerful empire that eventually reached Al-Andalus and influenced the entire Mediterranean region.
