Wied tal-Luq (Malta)

Weather…

Wied tal-Luq is a significant wooded valley located within Buskett Gardens near Siġġiewi, representing one of the few remaining semi-natural woodlands in Malta. The valley is shaped by a seasonal watercourse that sustains a density of vegetation rare for the islands, including White Poplar, Ash, and Willow trees. Historically, this area formed part of the hunting grounds for the Grand Masters of the Order of St. John, who established the Buskett woodland in the 16th century. Geographically, the valley’s relatively cool and humid microclimate makes it a well-suited sanctuary for vulnerable species, such as the Maltese Wood Mouse and various indigenous reptiles. It is also designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA) of international significance, serving as a vital roosting and nesting site for migratory birds of prey. Today, Wied tal-Luq is a strictly protected site, playing a key role in preserving Malta's original ecological landscape.
