Buskett Gardens (Malta)

Weather…

Buskett Gardens is the only extensive woodland area in the Maltese Islands, located in the fertile valley of Wied il-Luq near Siġġiewi. Originally planted by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century as a private hunting ground, it has evolved into a diverse ecosystem of Aleppo pines, holm oaks, and citrus groves. The gardens are of international importance as a major migration point for birds of prey, such as honey buzzards and marsh harriers, which use the thermal currents over the cliffs to cross the Mediterranean. Today, it is managed as a recreational forest and nature reserve, offering a rare green space in Malta's rocky landscape. The area also features historical structures, including the Verdala Palace which overlooks the trees. Its permanent water sources and dense canopy provide a habitat for various endemic insects and reptiles that struggle in drier parts of the islands.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are the prime seasons for birdwatching when migratory species pass through the woodland. Summer can be hot but still rewarding for resident birds and insects. Winter gives quieter walks with fewer visitors but also fewer migratory species.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is best for hearing birdsong and spotting shy species before the heat of the day. Late afternoon can also be productive as birds become active again before dusk. Midday is generally quieter and hotter.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on the designated paths to avoid disturbing nesting birds and trampling vegetation. Do not feed the birds or collect any plants, insects or animals. Keep noise to a minimum to avoid scaring wildlife.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential for getting a good view of the canopy and bird activity. Insect repellent is strongly recommended as there are many insects especially in summer. Comfortable walking shoes are needed for the woodland trails.
🧭
Getting there
Buskett Gardens is located near Rabat on the island of Malta. It is easily reachable by public bus from Valletta or by car with parking available nearby. The gardens are free to enter and open year-round.
🦌
What to expect
Birds in the gardens can be elusive and may take time to appear, especially in dense foliage. Sitting quietly on a bench and waiting can yield rewarding sightings. Be prepared for the heat in summer and bring plenty of water.
