Buskett Gardens (Woodland) (Malta)

Weather…

Buskett Gardens is one of the few remaining woodland areas in Malta, situated in a fertile valley between the towns of Siġġiewi and Dingli. The area was originally established in the 16th century by the Knights of St. John as a private hunting ground and was extensively planted with a variety of trees, including pines, cypresses, citrus groves, and fruit orchards. Overlooking the gardens is the imposing Verdala Palace, built in 1586 by Grand Master Hugues Loubenx de Verdalle as a summer residence. Today, Buskett serves as a vital ecological reserve and a premier recreational area, hosting some of the archipelago's richest biodiversity in flora and fauna. During the autumn months, it is a significant stopover point for migratory birds heading towards Africa. The gardens are maintained by a sophisticated system of irrigation channels, some of which date back to the Knights' era. Every year on June 29th, Buskett becomes the hub for the traditional 'L-Imnarja' festivities, a major folk festival celebrating Saints Peter and Paul with agricultural shows and traditional music. Its cool, shaded atmosphere makes Buskett a favorite destination for families and hikers, providing a lush green escape from the Mediterranean heat.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The gardens are generally reached by road, located near the town of Dingli and Rabat in Malta. Many visitors utilize public buses that stop reasonably close by, or drive directly to the woodland's main entrance area.
📅
Best season
Late winter and spring are typically the prime times to visit, when the citrus trees are thriving and wildflowers blossom. The dense canopy also provides a highly valued shady refuge during the intense summer heat of the island.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Pathways wind through terraced valleys, featuring a mix of paved walkways, earth trails, and some modest stone steps. While many central paths are wide and accessible, venturing deeper involves somewhat uneven woodland terrain.
🎒
What to bring
Standard casual footwear is usually fine, but comfortable walking shoes are better if you intend to explore the unpaved peripheral tracks. A light jacket is sometimes needed in winter, alongside a camera for the historic views.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is typically available along the main road leading to the gardens or in small designated patches near the entrances. Finding a spot is usually straightforward, except on major public holidays when locals gather for picnics.
⚠️
Safety
The environment is notably safe and well-frequented by families year-round. Some older stone steps or paths can become slightly slippery after winter rains, so walking carefully on mossy surfaces is gently advised.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend roughly one to two hours wandering along the leafy avenues and enjoying the views towards Verdala Palace. It makes for an excellent relaxed morning or afternoon outing rather than an exhausting full-day hike.
