Chadwick Lakes (Freshwater) (Malta)

Weather…

Chadwick Lakes, known locally as Wied il-Qlejgħa, are a series of artificial dams and reservoirs located in the western part of Malta between Rabat and Mtarfa. The system was designed in the 1890s by the British engineer Sir Osbert Chadwick to capture rainwater for agricultural use and to mitigate soil erosion in the valley. It constitutes the only significant freshwater ecosystem on the island, flourishing especially after the winter rains when the water levels are at their peak. The area supports a variety of riparian vegetation, including reeds, poplars, and willows, and provides a habitat for the endemic Maltese freshwater crab. Recent large-scale ecological restoration projects have focused on removing invasive species and restoring the valley's natural hydrological functions. The site remains a vital hydrological asset and a popular destination for nature walks and environmental education.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The valley is predominantly accessed via narrow country lanes leading outwards from the nearby towns of Rabat and Mtarfa. Visitors often drive down into the valley or walk from the higher surrounding residential edges.
📅
Best season
Winter and early spring are undeniably the finest times to visit when seasonal rains fill the dams and green the landscape. By high summer, the waterways generally dry up completely, drastically altering the scenery.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
A fairly accessible concrete pathway runs alongside the central water channels, suitable for a relaxed stroll. Surrounding fields and connecting paths can become exceedingly muddy and slippery after consecutive days of rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Waterproof shoes or sturdy boots are often necessary during the peak wet season to comfortably handle large puddles and soft ground. Bringing a camera is popular, as the flowing water creates uniquely lush scenes for the region.
🅿️
Parking
Informal parking is typically found along the sides of the narrow rural roads leading directly into the valley floor. Space gets extremely competitive on sunny winter weekends, prompting many to park further away and walk in.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors must be cautious of fast-flowing water passing over low bridges and spillways immediately after torrential storms. The paths can be quite slippery when coated in fresh mud, requiring careful footing near the edges.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical leisurely walk up and down the main accessible sections of the valley stream takes roughly an hour to complete. Photography enthusiasts or families picnicking nearby often extend their stay to half a day.
