Xlendi is a pretty seaside village in southwest Gozo, located within a deep, fjord-like bay flanked by towering limestone cliffs. Originally a small fishing community, Xlendi has evolved into a popular resort destination while retaining much of its maritime character. Guarding the bay's entrance is the Xlendi Tower, a defensive fortification built in 1650 during the reign of the Knights of St. John to deter pirate raids. A notable natural feature is the Kantra Valley, which runs down to the sea and is recognized for its unique Mediterranean flora. Coastal paths lead to various sea caves, including Caroline Cave, which is historically linked to local legends regarding the protection of nuns. Xlendi Bay has a significant underwater ecosystem, making it a prominent hub for diving and snorkeling activities. Despite modern tourism development, the bay's geology and abundant fossil remains continue to be of scientific importance.
