💡 Tips
- Take the short boat ride from the Inland Sea through the tunnel to the open sea for the best coastal views.
- Visit in the late afternoon; the sunset views over the cliffs and Fungus Rock are spectacular.
- Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, as the limestone terrain around the Blue Hole is extremely sharp and uneven.
- Bring snorkeling gear, but be cautious of strong currents when swimming outside the Inland Sea.
🍽 Food
Try this traditional ring-shaped bread topped with potatoes, capers, and tuna, available at the snack kiosks near the parking area.
Refresh yourself with Malta's bittersweet, orange-flavored local soda, great after exploring the sunny rocks. Available at local vendor stalls.
For a sit-down meal, head inland to nearby San Lawrenz village to find traditional restaurants serving fresh catch of the day.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look for small bags of locally harvested sea salt sold by vendors near the Inland Sea.
Pick up a jar of pickled capers, a staple of Gozitan cuisine often found at the tourist stalls.
Walk up towards the historic coastal watchtower for a peaceful vantage point away from the main tourist crowds.
Follow the cliffs to the south to find solitary spots excellent for meditating while watching the waves crash against Fungus Rock.

Dwejra is one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the Maltese Islands, located on the west coast of Gozo. It was most famous for the Azure Window, a massive natural limestone arch that collapsed during a storm in 2017. Despite its loss, Dwejra remains a top attraction due to its unique geological features. The Inland Sea (Qawra) is a lagoon linked to the open Mediterranean through a narrow 80-meter tunnel in the cliffs, where local fishermen take visitors on small boat excursions. Nearby lies the Blue Hole, a world-famous dive site consisting of a vertical chimney in the rock that opens into the sea. Another prominent feature is Fungus Rock (Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral), a monolithic rock in the bay that was once guarded by the Knights of Malta for a rare medicinal plant. The surrounding limestone is rich in fossils, from sea urchins to ancient shells, making it a paradise for geology enthusiasts. It is also the premier spot on the islands to witness the sunset over the sea.
