Marsa is a major port and industrial town situated at the innermost end of the Grand Harbour in Malta. Its name is derived from the Arabic word for 'harbor', reflecting its long-standing importance as a maritime hub. Since antiquity, when Phoenicians and Romans utilized the area as a safe anchorage, Marsa has been a center for trade and shipping activities. During the 19th century, the harbor area was extensively developed with docks and warehouses to serve the strategic interests of the British Empire. Today, Marsa is widely recognized as Malta's sports capital, hosting the national horse racing track, cricket grounds, and various athletic facilities. Despite its heavy industrial landscape, the town features notable architecture such as the neo-gothic Holy Trinity Church. Marsa also serves as a critical infrastructure node, housing major power distribution centers and water treatment facilities for the entire island.
