Attard is an elegant village in the center of Malta and, together with Balzan and Lija, forms the so-called 'Three Villages'. This region has for centuries been a preferred residential area for Maltese nobility and wealthy citizens, reflected in the abundance of magnificent villas and well-kept gardens. The most significant landmark of the town is San Anton Palace, the official residence of the President of Malta. The palace was built in the early 17th century by Grand Master Antoine de Paule as a summer residence. The surrounding San Anton Gardens are open to the public and house an impressive collection of exotic plants and trees. Another historic structure is the Wignacourt Aqueduct, which once carried water from the hills near Rabat to Valletta and passes through Attard. The town's parish church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is a masterpiece of Maltese Renaissance architecture. Despite modern development, Attard has retained its quiet, refined character. The town is also famous for its citrus fruits, which flourish in the private gardens of the historic estates.
