The Basilica of Saint Helen in Birkirkara is one of the most magnificent examples of 18th-century Maltese Baroque architecture. Constructed between 1727 and 1745, it replaced an older church to serve as the main place of worship for one of the largest and oldest parishes on the island. The design is often attributed to the Maltese architect Salvu Borg, with its monumental facade and twin bell towers dominating the skyline. One of these towers houses the largest bell in Malta, which was cast in 1932. The interior of the basilica is lavishly decorated, featuring marble floors, intricate frescoes, and an impressive main altar. The titular feast of Saint Helen is celebrated annually in August with great fervor, with the procession taking place on Sunday morning, a unique custom in the Maltese festal calendar. In 1950, Pope Pius XII granted the church the title of Basilica Minor, recognizing its outstanding religious and historical significance.
