Mosta is one of the most populous towns in Malta, situated in the heart of the northern region of the island. The dominant landmark is the Mosta Rotunda, a basilica with one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. Built in the 19th century by architect Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, the church was constructed directly over an older parish church. A famous incident during World War II, known as the 'Miracle of Mosta', significantly contributed to the town's global fame: a German aerial bomb pierced the dome during a mass but failed to explode, leaving none of the 300 worshippers present injured. A replica of the bomb is displayed in the sacristy today. Beyond the Rotunda, Mosta has a rich history dating back to the Stone Age, evidenced by the Speranza Cave and ancient catacombs. The town is also a major commercial hub with a lively main street full of shops and cafes. Geographically, Mosta sits near Wied il-Għasel, one of Malta's deepest valleys, first-rate for nature walks. The Victoria Lines, a historic British defense system, also pass through the municipality's territory.
