Żonqor Point (Malta)

Weather…

Żonqor Point is a prominent headland at the northern entrance to Marsaskala Bay in southeastern Malta. The area is characterized by a rugged coastline of coralline limestone, shaped by centuries of erosion and human use in the form of rock-cut salt pans. These historic salt pans testify to the traditional salt harvesting deeply rooted in this region. Żonqor Point is part of the proposed Inwied National Park, aiming to protect the remaining natural coastal stretches from urban encroachment. The waters around the headland are highly popular among divers, particularly due to two nearby scuttled tugboat wrecks that now serve as artificial reefs. Geologically, the site features a glimpse into Malta's flat karst landscape with its typical rock formations and salt-tolerant flora. Despite modern development plans, Żonqor Point remains an important location for walking, fishing, and observing marine biodiversity, away from the heavy tourist crowds.
