Immaculate Conception Parish Church (Malta)

Weather…

The Parish Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cospicua (Bormla) is one of the most splendid religious monuments in the Three Cities, miraculously escaping destruction during World War II. While the surrounding city was almost entirely reduced to rubble, the church remained largely unscathed, an event interpreted by the faithful as divine intervention. Construction of the present church began in the 17th century over an older chapel and was expanded over time to become a prominent example of Maltese Baroque architecture. The interior is sumptuously decorated, featuring marble floors, intricate ceiling frescoes, and an impressive main altar. The church houses numerous artistic treasures, including works by artists such as Polidoro da Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. Every year on December 8th, a solemn procession is held, which is one of the most important religious events on the island. For the residents of Cospicua, the church is not only a spiritual hub but also an anchor of their historical identity.
