Qormi, officially known as Città Pinto, is one of Malta's most populous cities, situated southwest of Valletta. The city was granted its honorary title in 1743 by Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, whose coat of arms still adorns many local buildings. Historically, Qormi is renowned as the heart of Maltese baking, earning it the nickname 'Casal Fornaro' (Bakers' Village). This heritage is celebrated annually through 'Lejl f'Casal Fornaro', a festival that keeps the history of bread-making alive. A unique feature is the city's division into two large parishes dedicated to Saint George and Saint Sebastian, leading to intense but friendly rivalry during their respective feasts. The architecture of Qormi ranges from narrow medieval alleys to magnificent Baroque churches. As a major economic hub, the city now hosts numerous businesses and industrial estates while maintaining its traditional character in the residential quarters. Its geographic location in a valley has historically led to frequent flooding, which has significantly shaped the city's urban development.
