San Anton Palace
San Anton Palace, located in Attard, serves as the official residence of the President of Malta and is one of the most prestigious historical sites in the country. The palace was built between 1623 and 1636 by Grand Master Antoine de Paule as a country villa and was named after his patron saint, Anthony of Padua. The architecture reflects a transition from fort-like rural houses to more refined Baroque estates, featuring grand courtyards and ornate interiors. Surrounding the palace are the famous San Anton Gardens, which were opened to the public in 1882 by the British Governor. These gardens are home to a diverse array of exotic plants, centuries-old trees, decorative fountains, and roaming peacocks, offering a serene environment in the heart of Malta. Historically, the palace has been the residence of Grand Masters, British Governors, and, since 1974, the Presidents of the Republic. Today, it remains a vital site for state functions and cultural activities, including the annual open-air Shakespeare festival.
