The Il-Għollieqa Ridge is located in the San Ġwann and Kappara area of northeastern Malta. This geological formation is best known for the Wied Għollieqa Nature Reserve, a protected valley adjacent to the ridge. Geologically, the ridge consists of Globigerina Limestone, where erosion has carved deep fissures and small caves. Historically, the area was used for agriculture before Malta's urban expansion reached the ridge. Today, it serves as one of the few 'green lungs' in the densely populated metropolitan area of Sliema and St Julian's. The ridge is home to a variety of indigenous trees, such as the Maltese Sandarac Gum Tree and the Carob tree. Ecologically, the ridge is of immense value for migratory birds and local insect populations that find shelter in the dense Mediterranean vegetation.

The area is typically accessed via easily navigable connecting paths stemming directly from the adjacent suburban developments bordering the San Ġwann valley. These informal entrances simply merge quietly with the natural woods.

It is genuinely enjoyable practically year-round explicitly due to the exceptionally welcome natural shade provided continuously by the lovely dense local woodland. Winters can sometimes be somewhat muddy underfoot after heavy rainfall.

The location features a delightful, mostly heavily wooded undulating environment that carefully hugs the incredibly steep, scenic upper edges of the valley. The ground is often beautifully covered with a soft layer of natural leaf litter.

Ordinary, comfortable, and highly reliable closed walking shoes are completely sufficient for a casual stroll here. Mosquito repellent can often be extremely useful after wet weather due to increased insect activity in the dense shade.

Drivers typically leave their private cars safely parked in the incredibly quiet, immediately adjacent residential streets before actively entering the woodland area. As long as parking rules are respected, finding a spot is easy.

The winding paths are generally very safe and well protected from the elements. Carefully watch out for occasionally slippery tree roots or wet leaves underfoot, and strictly stay on main trails to avoid trampling sensitive native plants.

A completely relaxed, entirely informal walk through the beautifully dense tree canopy normally takes roughly thirty to sixty minutes of your time. This location is totally first-rate for a very short, revitalizing nature break from the city.
