Għadira Nature Reserve (Malta)

Weather…

The Għadira Nature Reserve in Mellieħa is the largest remaining salt marsh in the Maltese Islands and serves as a critical wetland ecosystem. Managed by BirdLife Malta, the approximately 7-hectare reserve was officially established in 1980 following extensive ecological restoration efforts to preserve its natural state. It provides a vital resting and feeding ground for over 200 species of migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa across the Mediterranean. The lagoon is separated from the popular Għadira Bay beach by a narrow road, yet it maintains a distinct habitat for salt-tolerant flora and rare aquatic species. Visitors can access specialized hides for birdwatching, allowing for the observation of species such as the Black-winged Stilt and various kingfishers. The reserve is a designated Ramsar site, reflecting its international importance for conservation and environmental education on the archipelago.
