Is-Simar Bird Sanctuary (Malta)

Weather…

Is-Simar Bird Sanctuary is a protected wetland located in the Pwales Valley near Xemxija, in northern Malta. The sanctuary was established in 1992 on a previously degraded marshland that had been impacted by agricultural use and illegal dumping. Extensive restoration efforts transformed the area into a mosaic of reed beds, open water lagoons, and salt marshes, currently managed by BirdLife Malta. The site is of international significance, designated as a Natura 2000 site and a Ramsar wetland of international importance. It provides a vital refuge and nesting ground for numerous migratory birds traveling across the Mediterranean between Europe and Africa. Resident species include the Reed Warbler and the Moorhen, while various ducks and herons frequent the area during the winter months. The sanctuary features bird hides and nature trails, allowing visitors to observe wildlife discreetly while learning about the critical importance of wetland conservation for global biodiversity and ecological balance.
