Sidi Yahya Mosque (Mali)

Weather…

The Sidi Yahya Mosque in Timbuktu was completed around 1400 and serves as a vital component of the historic University of Timbuktu. The mosque is named after its first imam, Sidi Yahya al-Tadelsi, who was a prominent scholar and a close friend of the city's founder. Its architecture follows the traditional Sudano-Sahelian style, characterized by massive earthen walls and a prominent square minaret that overlooks the ancient city. Throughout its history, the mosque remained largely unchanged, preserving its medieval layout and spiritual atmosphere for over six centuries. A long-standing local legend claimed that the mosque's "holy door" would only open at the end of the world, a belief that was challenged when the door was broken down by militants in 2012. Today, as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the mosque undergoes annual re-plastering by the local community to protect the fragile mud structure from the harsh Saharan environment.
