Djinguereber Mosque (Mali)

Weather…

The Djinguereber Mosque is the oldest of the three great mosques of Timbuktu, built around 1327 after Mansa Musa's return from his legendary pilgrimage to Mecca. Architect Abu Ishaq al-Sahili was commissioned to construct the structure using a mix of mud, limestone, and timber beams, integrating Andalusian stylistic elements. The mosque features two minarets and 25 rows of prayer pillars, providing an impressive sense of space. As a major educational institution, it was part of the University of Timbuktu and attracted students from across North and West Africa. The thick earthen walls provide excellent natural temperature regulation against the extreme heat of the Sahara. Since 1988, the mosque has been recognized as part of Timbuktu's UNESCO World Heritage status. Despite occasional attacks and the threat of sandstorms, the building is lovingly maintained by the local community and remains a living place of prayer and contemplation.
