Djingareyber Mosque (Mali)

Weather…

The Djingareyber Mosque in Timbuktu is one of the most significant monuments of the Mali Empire's golden age and a masterpiece of Sudano-Sahelian architecture. It was constructed in 1327 by order of Emperor Mansa Musa after his return from his legendary pilgrimage to Mecca. The mosque was designed by the Andalusian architect Abu Ishaq al-Sahili, who introduced new techniques and forms to the region. The structure is built almost entirely from earth, wood, and straw, with characteristic minarets and protruding timber beams (toron) serving both structural and maintenance functions. As part of the University of Timbuktu, the mosque was for centuries a hub for Islamic scholarship and science. Despite the threats of desertification and political instability, it remains an active place of worship and has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988.
